This Large Polar bear rug carries a history from a time when life on Svalbard was vastly different than it is today. It comes from a trapper who lived and worked on Svalbard in 1972; this was the last polar bear legally shot before the species was granted total protection. The story goes that it was a young male bear, and the polar bear rug has been carefully preserved over the decades. This makes the rug a unique and authentic piece of Norwegian polar history—a rarity that is extremely difficult to acquire today.
The fur does not shed, and despite its age, the bear appears to have been very well maintained. As is typical for older, original polar bear rugs, there is some minor cosmetic wear consistent with age in certain areas. This includes a few visible crease marks from transport, a faded spot on the lips, and some wear on the velvet backing. These details are barely noticeable in the overall context and do not detract from the majestic impression it creates—a distinctive and impressive focal point, perfect for a large cabin, a fireplace lounge, or a polar collection.
The face has a remarkably fine, natural expression and bears the marks of battle scars on the left side of the muzzle—just in front of the eye—which lend character to the head. The fur features a beautiful, natural creamy-white tone with a slightly warmer golden patina, particularly around the head and neck. The rug is mounted on a red velvet backing with multiple protective layers to safeguard both the floor and the skin.
